The aim of our research program

Our overall goal is to understand how the intricate neural circuitry of the mammalian brain stem develops during embryonic and fetal life. To achieve this, we are identifying genes and characterizing gene interactions that pattern brainstem neurons known to be involved in specific autonomic functions. The neuron populations we are focusing on include somatic and visceral motoneurons, reticulospinal neurons, vestibular projection neurons, serotonergic and catecholaminergic neurons, precerebellar neurons, trigeminal neurons, and neurons controlling breathing and cardiovascular function. Our approach is multidisciplinary and integrated. We bring a variety of state-of-the-art molecular genetic, neuroanatomical, electrophysiological, and optical recording techniques to bear on the problem.

Who we are

The Brainstem Genetics Research Consortium consists of 7 groups: 6 academic research laboratories and 1 biotechnology company. We are supported by a research grant from the European Union through the 5th Framework Quality of Life Program (contract number QLG2-CT-2001-01467). The consortium is based at the University of Oslo, home institution of the coordinator Joel C. Glover. Partner groups are located in Norway, Sweden, England, and France.
