IMAGE OF THE MONTH
September 2003

Dorsal view of the brain stem of a chicken embryo
which has been labeled with a voltage sensitive dye to reveal electrical
activity in neural circuits. Membrane potential is color coded,
with depolarization increasing towards the red. A specific branch
of the left vestibular nerve has been stimulated, leading to activity
in specific subpopulations of vestibular neurons (lower left), which
have then activated synaptically specific populations of motoneurons
in the oculomotor and trochlear motor nuclei (upper middle region).
From studies performed by Joel Glover in collaboration with Yoko
Momose-Sato and Katsushige Sato at the Tokyo Medical and Dental
University.
